Pink Lake (Lake Hillier)
Lake Hillier, often referred to as the “Pink Lake,” is a natural wonder located on Middle Island, the largest island in the Recherche Archipelago off the coast of Esperance. The lake is renowned for its vibrant pink hue, a phenomenon that has intrigued scientists and visitors alike.
- Location: Middle Island, approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) southeast of Esperance.
- Access: Due to its remote location and protected status, access to Lake Hillier is limited. The most common way to experience its beauty is via scenic flights departing from Esperance, offering aerial views of the striking contrast between the pink lake and the surrounding turquoise ocean. Some tour operators also offer boat trips, but these are less frequent and subject to weather conditions.
- Unique Feature: The lake’s permanent pink color is believed to result from the presence of the algae Dunaliella salina and pink bacteria known as halobacteria. Interestingly, the pink hue remains even when the water is collected in a container.
- Note: As of February 2025, Lake Hillier has experienced a temporary change in color due to significant offshore rainfall diluting its salinity. Experts anticipate that the lake’s iconic pink hue will return as natural conditions stabilize.
